Water damage – once you have it, it’ll either gradually destroy your home, or you’ll immediately know the effects. It all boils down to what has been damaged, and how fast it would take for that damage to take control over your home. As mentioned earlier, depending on the damage, some can happen as soon as it happens. You may also notice more negative effects as the days or even weeks pass by. This is most especially true if you don’t do anything about that water damage.
Water Damage Common Causes
Water damage and its effects can be frustrating. This usually occurs whenever water stays in an area in your home where it’s not meant to be. Finding out the causes of why water damage occurs can help this. Some may be due to extreme weather conditions, which can’t be avoided, but the majority of the time, water damage can be prevented.
Calamities
Extreme weather conditions and other acts of God such as hurricanes and storms are the top causes of water damage. This is one of the reasons why you need to make sure that your home is carefully built and has a solid structure, most especially if you’re in an area where storms and hurricanes happen often. Bear in mind though, that it’s not only the disaster-prone houses are the only ones that should be prepared for times like these.
The force of nature and other natural causes may cause severe damage to your house if not take care of or assessed as soon as possible. Sometimes, the damage would initially start small that it’ll start unnoticeable, and the only time that you’ll be able to see it is when the damage has started to become worse. All of these may be caused by poor home structure partnered with heavy rains or other acts of nature.
When the time comes, these types of water damage may be too sudden that you won’t even have time to prepare what’s coming for you. This is why homes must have a sound and sturdy structure as natural calamities may happen at any time of the year.
Broken Pipes and Plumbing System
Another reason why water damage may occur to any home is due to a ruptured pipeline, or a broken plumbing system. Plumbing systems tend to break when the pipes are starting to crack due to age. Did you know that you need to regularly maintain your pipes? While it may have last you years, these pipes aren’t indestructible and would cause damage to your home one way or another.
If you’re living in a cold area, the pipes may get frozen – which can also cause them to break. Plumbing systems can also get damaged due to human error. This is commonly experienced by homeowners who’ve had a recent construction or renovation. During this time, machines will be used and sometimes, they may have drilled or accidentally damaged some of the pipes causing them to crack.
As mentioned earlier, there will be times that the homeowner won’t be able to notice the broken pipes as the damage is small; until the damage multiplies and there’s a large puddle of water in your basement.
Make sure to watch out for simple signals that your plumbing system is broken. Some of these signs may include a foul odor in your home. If you also hear some bubbling noises, this also indicates that there’s a broken pipeline.
Water Buildup
As mentioned earlier, there are certain areas in your home that are prone to water damage such as your attic, basement, gutters, or any area that has a shallow point. The shallow point usually catches water and it may be able to hold it there for a long period of time – which may eventually cause water damage.
Additionally, there are some areas inside your home that are left forgotten, and sometimes, when the damage starts in these areas, it will be too late to stop it from causing further problems. Have you ever wondered why your home’s structure has suddenly become compromised? Moisture on your ceiling is an indication that there’s damage in your home and you should have it checked immediately.
Malfunctioning Household Appliances
Another common cause of water damage may involve household appliances that don’t function properly. Some of these are your dishwasher and your washing machine. You may also want to take a look at your dehumidifier, refrigerator, air-conditioning system, and your heater. These appliances often contain water and when they are faulty, it can overflow. Leaving all of these appliances unattended can cause a pool of water to overflow, causing severe damage to its surrounding areas.
